Experts teaching their own subject routinely produce tutorials that are accurate and hard to follow. The usual fault is sequence rather than content, and it comes from teaching the path they took.
Discovery order is shaped by dead ends
Someone learning a skill independently accumulates it out of order, through failed attempts, half-understood explanations and eventual corrections.
Reconstructing that path for a viewer preserves the dead ends without the context that made them meaningful, and the learner absorbs the detours as if they were the method.
The knowledge is real; the ordering is an artefact of how one person happened to encounter it, and it does not generalise.
Beginners need something that works before they need why
Instruction that establishes principles first asks the learner to hold abstractions with nothing to attach them to, and retention under those conditions is poor.
Producing a working result early gives every subsequent explanation something concrete to modify, and the explanation lands because the learner has already felt the problem it solves.
That is why strong tutorials begin with a complete if simplified outcome, then return to explain what was skipped over.
The expert cannot feel where the difficulty is
Fluency makes intermediate steps invisible. A practitioner performs several decisions at once without registering them as decisions, and those are precisely the steps a beginner cannot infer.
The omissions are invisible to the person making them, which is why testing a tutorial on an actual beginner finds problems no amount of review will.
Comment sections do this work eventually, but only after the video is published and the confused viewers have already left.
Sequencing rules that survive most subjects
Useful orderings tend to share a shape, regardless of what is being taught.
- One new concept per step, never two.
- A visible result before any explanation of the mechanism.
- Errors introduced deliberately, so recovery is taught rather than assumed.
- Terminology introduced after the thing it names has been used.
Each of these reduces how much a learner must hold in mind at once, which is the actual constraint in instructional video.
Length follows sequence, not the reverse
Tutorials become long because material arrives in the wrong order and requires backtracking, not because the subject is inherently large.
Reordering usually shortens a piece substantially, since correctly sequenced steps do not need to be re-explained after later material makes them make sense.
The test is whether any section requires the viewer to remember something unexplained from earlier. Where it does, the order is wrong rather than the video too short.
