Okay look, I’m not gonna pretend this whole “cut the cord” thing happened smoothly for me. It’s March already and I’m still paying for one stupid service I forgot to cancel (looking at you, random sports app I used once). But seriously, between my rent here in the Philly suburbs creeping up every year, gas prices doing whatever they want, and me getting takeout way too often because cooking feels like a full-time job after work, something had to give. Streaming was the easiest thing to attack. I was juggling like four or five paid ones—Netflix, Hulu live (dumb decision), Paramount because I got into Halo or something, Disney because my niece visits and wants Moana on repeat. I’d open the TV, stare at the home screen like an idiot for ten minutes, then just watch Food Network reruns on actual cable. Pathetic.
So yeah, I went hunting for top free streaming apps that don’t suck. And most of them really don’t. They’re ad-supported, sure, but the ads are short and I can live with that instead of $60+ a month disappearing from my account.

These are the ones I’ve actually been using almost every night lately. All legal, all free in the US right now, work on phone / tablet / smart TV / Roku / whatever cheap streaming stick I have plugged in.
Tubi Is Still My Number One (Even When It Annoys Me)
Tubi has so much stuff it’s overwhelming sometimes. I watched this whole terrible-but-amazing 90s action movie series last week—popcorn all over my lap, paused every five minutes because the dog wanted attention, ads popping right when the hero was about to reveal the big plan. I yelled at my phone like it could hear me. Still finished the season though.
Pros: stupid huge library, no paywall to start watching, looks good on my old Android. Cons: the ad timing is evil sometimes, and every once in a while you get stuck in a loop of the same commercial.
Pluto TV – Basically Free Cable That Doesn’t Judge You
Pluto is the one I put on when I don’t wanna pick. Live channels for days—there’s literally a Westerns channel, a Star Trek one, random 80s music video stuff. Last Sunday it was pouring rain, I curled up with coffee and let Pluto just run old MTV spring break clips from like 1999. Felt weirdly nostalgic and kinda sad at the same time. Good times.

Roku Channel – Sneaky Good Even If I Don’t Own Roku
I don’t have a Roku device but the app works fine on my TV anyway. They throw in free movies, some live news, even sports clips. Watched this low-budget alien invasion movie here a couple nights ago—got so into it I burned the garlic bread I was making. Oops.
A few others I bounce between:
- Kanopy (use your library card—zero ads, feels fancy)
- Freevee (Amazon’s free one, decent if you’re already in their world)
- Xumo or Sling Freestream for more live channel hopping

So Yeah… Wrapping This Mess Up
I’m not saying go cancel everything paid tomorrow—sometimes you just need new Stranger Things or whatever drops. But leaning on these top free streaming apps has genuinely made my wallet breathe easier, and I’ve found shows/movies I never would’ve paid for. It’s not perfect, the ads get old, the selection rotates, but it’s free and it’s right there.
Just go download one tonight. Tubi first probably. Or Pluto if you like channel surfing. Tell me in the comments what you’re watching—I need more ideas because my watchlist is already ridiculous. Enjoy the couch time, friends. 🍿 (and sorry about the popcorn crumbs everywhere)
